About Newry Rainbow Community

Newry Rainbow Community was founded on the 9th of November 2004 at a meeting in the Canal Court Hotel.

It is a social, befriending and informational organisatation that exists to offer support to the the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans-gender population in Newry City and the surrounding counties of Armagh, Down and Louth.

The Newry LGB&T Centre is located at 28a Monaghan Street and is only a short distance from the main bus Depot – a very important consideration in regard to addressing the needs of LGB&T people living in isolated rural areas.

A dedicated centre will now allow the NRC to comprehensively address the needs of the LGB&T community through the development and delivery of focused services that will support and develop individuals and the LGB&T community. The NRC intend to maximise the opportunities that a dedicated Centre now affords, and by doing that ensure that it is a permanent sustainable resource for LGB&T people, and their families and friends.

Not only will the services and support provided through a dedicated centre be of enormous benefit to LGB&T people in terms of promoting equal opportunities but it will also produce positive outcomes for the wider society, and local communities, through building constructive relationships between the wider community and LGB&T people; through the promotion of inclusivity, integration, tolerance and cultural diversity and through the promotion of equality and good relations and tackling manifestations of homophobia and intolerance.

The NRC constitution publishes their objectives as follows:

3.1 The NRC is established as a social, befriending and informational organisation for the benefit of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered community (hereinafter called “Our Community”) in Newry City and the surrounding counties of Armagh, Down and Louth (hereinafter called the “area of benefit”) with the aim of improving their quality of life and their confidence within the broader community [and in particular, but not so as to limit the generality of the foregoing:]

a) To build a sense of community amongst ourselves while also helping to create equality and a sense of belonging in our wider area of benefit.

b) To offer support and encouragement by providing a social infrastructure easily accessed by all, especially people that are not “out” to their family or friends.

c) To assist in the mental and physical well-being of our gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered community by providing educational material and support and providing a referral list of available services such as Counselling or Health Clinics.

d) To educate the entire population in our area of benefit of the presence of a vibrant lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered community, with the aim of banishing stereotypes and encourage them to see us not as a threat but positive contributors to our areas work and social sectors, who come from all walks of life.

e) To work closely with relevant organisations in Newry, Dundalk and other areas with the objective of sharing skills and information and social interaction.

    Hi there,

Myself and a friend from Belfast might be interested in ur film project. We’re both transgender, I have done a few TV reality series and she is a singer-songwriter. We have been thinking of ways to give back to our community and this could be it.

Also could you advise of nights out you would have in Newry, I just love the people down there 🙂
