What about a girl buying her girlfriend a card with the message “To my girlfriend with Love” and queueing up in the shop. Yes it can be nerve wreaking, Will the assistant give me a funny look? Will someone in the queue out me to the world? Paranoid – me – Surely not!
Or lets move on to the florists. A dozen red roses please says he. “your girlfriend will love those” says the shop assistant. “He will indeed” says you!
What recession – Sure a lovely weekend away for the newly Civil Partnered couple would be great – Lets book the double room at the bed and breakfast or Hotel. I can’t remember how many times we arrived at our accommodation after booking a double and were put in a room with two single beds but it has been many. Mind you I am never really sure if it’s because they assumed we obviously had made a mistake in the booking or because they just don’t approve. It’s the same result anyway!
Romantic meal for two anyone? Boyfriend and girlfriend, eyes, meeting across a candlelit room, maybe holding hands and a wee kiss. You can feel the love in the air can’t you – awwwwwww. Now substitute that for two women or two men! Would it be uncomfortable for them? Could they hold hands? I think you could forget about the hand holding and the kiss – too many strange looks.
Yes love is in the air indeed but just remember love knows no barriers. Greater awareness of the presence of a LGB and T population has certainly helped make all these little embarrasments more manageable – and laughable in recent years and indeed greater confidence within our own community helps as well. While a few years ago I personally would have just put up with being given the wrong room, now I have no hesitation in getting it changed and as for the romantic meal … here’s hoping!

Love this. It’s so true and it’s a little disheartening that gay people can’t feel as comfortable in public together as straight people would.
Everyone gets a warm welcome here and all double room come with a double bed 😉
